Comfrey (Symphytum officinale) , otherwise known as "Knitbone", is another one of my personal favorite herbs. Internal usage of comfrey should be avoided because it contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. These can be toxic to the liver and fatal if taken in excess.
We use comfrey frequently for healing cuts, scrapes and wounds. It can also be used to help broken bones. Comfreys medicinal properties include allantoin. Allantoin speeds the healing of cells in the body. Be sure to use Comfrey on a wound that has been well cleaned out. If it is not cleaned thouroughly, comfrey will trap the dirt inside, and infection can develop.
In the organic garden Comfrey can also be used as a fertilizer.
